Celebrating Taiwan

This year, Taiwan’s government is celebrating the Republic of China’s 100 year’s anniversary. An anniversary that is difficult to fully appreciate as the Republic of China has only been a part of Taiwan’s history for the past 62 years since the Chinese Nationalist government took over the government building in Taipei which was built by the Japanese who was inspired by European architecture.

We in Taiwan Corner prefers to celebrate the progress that the Taiwanese have achieved not because of the Republic of China, but despite the Republic of China. After all, it was pressure from the Taiwanese and the international community that led former President of Taiwan Chiang Ching-Kuo to initiate the democratization of Taiwan such that Taiwan today enjoys one of the few democratic states in Asia.

The Taiwanese are a truly wonderful people and thus 2011 is Celebrating Taiwan year!

We celebrate the Taiwanese with a series of articles about Taiwan during 2011 from several recognized Taiwan experts and commentators.

We hope that you will enjoy the articles.
