China down on Taiwan

Translation from “På nakken af Kina” in Danish newspaper-Information on March 18. 2009.

In the otherwise excellent feature article of Mogens Lykketoft and Mette Holm (Information Monday March 16.), they state that China shows “responsibility and visions” for Taiwan in contrast to Tibet.

The authors may have been dazzled by the economic negotiations between Taiwan and China, because China still got 1,500 missiles pointing toward Taiwan and new missiles are still being set up despite of the ongoing negotiations. China demands Taiwan annexed in the country as a condition for an agreement.

Is it visionary to suppress the Taiwanese? Taiwan has experienced quite heavy demonstrations against the government and China, and Taiwan has an ongoing and intense debate about whether Taiwan should enter an agreement with China or not. More than 80 percent of the Taiwanese do not want to be part of China.

Is it responsible by China to try to block Taiwanese women’s admission to the UN meeting about Women rights last week? Even Taiwan’s China-friendly government party mentions that China hinders Taiwan’s diplomacy.

Misleading platitudes about a complex conflict does not improve understanding.
